Welcome to our class page. In our class you will see children who love learning and enjoy finding out more about the world around them. We love visiting places to enrich our understanding and use our fabulous outdoor environment to enhance our curriculum. If you ask an Owl how they spend their time the answer should be ‘Owls spend their time wisely!’

With this in mind every Friday you will be able to see new photos of our learning throughout the week to see how we have made the most of our learning.

Please see the following equipment list that children need to bring in to school every day.

Reading book and reading record.

Trainers and/or wellies for outdoor play.

Named water bottle.

Lightweight waterproof coat and sun hat both named.

Large, named old t-shirt for art/painting that can be left in school.

Swimming is on a Monday and PE is on a Friday. Please can children come to school in PE clothes on both days and remember to bring their swimming kit in a named bag.

Spellings

The children in Owls are all using a precision teaching method to learn the Y3 and Y4 words and associated spelling rules. First of all they read the words, then they practise spelling them using a variety of strategies such as writing the word over and over again, drawing pictures to help them remember the tricky letters in the word or shutting their eyes and writing the word. The last part is checking that they can now spell the word properly. In one minute, their partner reads the word and they have to write it down, writing as quickly as possible so they write the most number of words possible. The whole process takes 10 minutes and they do it every day. Phew! Your children will be able to show you! At home, pick a small number of the spellings from the list each week - you will know best how many to tackle at once! Make it fun, do it daily for 5 days and keep to 10 minutes for the whole session.

Reading

In Class we have a selection of recommended reads for each year group along with a list of recommended reads in your child’s reading record. We love reading and record our class reading journey each term. A broad and rich range of texts builds our vocabulary banks that we then use in our writing.

Your child should have a reading book from school and should read for 15 minutes each day, 5 times a week. Once your child has finished a book they can return it to school where they can then choose a new book.

Reading records are used to record what has been read each day and any words that were read confidently or some that may have proved more tricky can also be noted down. The VIPERS reading comprehension skills are attached below to help support your child in asking questions about the text.

Maths

Every term Maths KIRFs will be uploaded to support learning in class and recall of key facts. For further support there a re key tips and some vocabulary on each KIRF. It is so important to build on key facts so that they can be quickly recalled.
